Review: f(x) – “Red Light” is a Treat for the Eyes and Ears

red-light-teaser-fx-3

If there was a problem for f(x) heading into its “Red Light” comeback, it was that the group was increasingly becoming one note. And while that sort of branding may have helped the group establish itself when it was debuting, over time the same-sounding electro-pop anthems blasted over a stream of neon-colored dance-in-a-box sets started to become predictable. Last year’s “Rum Pum Pum Pum” displayed f(x) at their creative lowest – a misguided, sparse summer snooze-fest overlaying a video which may as well have been pieced together from other f(x) releases. Luckily, it’s a new year and  “Red Light” is a fairly major corrective course for the SM Entertainment quintet. “Red Light” demonstrates that even a group with an MO as established as f(x) can release something that is both refreshingly different AND wholly within the group’s wheelhouse at the same time.

The most surprising thing about “Red Light” is how it manages to make a tightly composed beat sound utterly anarchic. The beat takes the standard f(x) electronic instruments and proceeds to work them tirelessly. Claps to start have an added electronic grind placed over it as newly introduced elements keep add on top of each other until a real rich and substantive lower register is solidified. Lyrical entrances alternate between being purposely hollow and double tracked (a trick which is employed quite well throughout) to give some depth and balance the spastic electronic wail and thumping bass. The approach to each chorus uses the proper amount of build up, preparing the listener for transitions while never overextending their welcome to the point of dulling their impact.

As for the chorus themselves, they’re pretty fantastic. The synths gleefully bounce in every direction while the vocals are blended together into a smoothie of synthesized glory. The bridge perfectly transitions to a slower and more subdued mixture of low keys and bombastic vocals before going for the final killer chorus. The vocal performances in the verses themselves aren’t particularly noteworthy or distinctive but for a song like this, it barely matters. As far as integrating f(x)’s sound into the current K-Pop trend of having plenty of seemingly incongruous transitions between varying beats, “Red Light” knocks it out of the park.

Then there’s the music video, which should be regarded as a shining beacon of hope for the poor “dance-in-a-box” concept. “Red Light” shows that with enough smart editing and imaginative direction, even the most basic of concepts can come alive. Sure, there are still the solo shots interspersed with choreography shots and establishing group shots. For an SM Entertainment production, those things are as essential as the idols themselves. What really makes “Red Light” a great video is how those things are employed. Lighting filters are used ambitiously and without much constraint. Dark and heavy filters are contrasted with bright kinetic strobes to give all the group and individual shots a sense of artistic foreboding that plays well with the music. Choreography shots are sometimes framed in the same style but more often a wider angle and clearer lighting are used so that the intricacies of the group’s positioning and dance movements can (gasp) actually be seen and appreciated.

The styling and wardrobe of each member is another added layer which shouldn’t be underrated either. Every member is styled very distinctly from each other, which helps emphasize the purposeful controlled chaos that “Red Light” aims for. One can immediately tell Krystal from Amber from Sulli by silhouette alone (another thing which gives f(x) more latitude to play with lighting effects without losing any clarity). Like the sets of the video itself, f(x) simultaneously looks remarkably well put together and on the verge of dilapidation. The group is pretty (Luna and Victoria, good lord), but like every other component in this production, it’s a prettiness with a distinct and recognizable point of view.

“Red Light” could have tripped up at so many points that it’s worth praising it for simply not falling on its face. The fact that it’s actually very good as a whole is a small miracle. The song understands how to make something seem unstable while never losing grasp of sound pop structure through its mixture of layered beats and  processed vocals. The video captures the intensity and insanity of the feverish techno-beats and manifests it as a kaleidoscope of imagery that successfully skirts the line between a psychedelic high and a bad trip.  “Red Light” takes the standard f(x) package and throws it up against a carnival fun house mirror and somehow the group’s reflection comes out looking better than ever.

Listening to this song without the watching the video its sounds like Jessica joined 4Minute. And I don’t like the idea of that at all. I also have to say to the Slug that I am glad you did not mention IGAB once in your review. Others seem to be comparing the two. I think the song is good, the video better than the song, but the goth blonde Krystal thing is not working for me.

    1. If Jessica joined 4 Minute, maybe Hyuna joined SNSD in a trade. Wouldn’t that stir up the Netizens in Korea and get the Sones up in arms…lol.

I will say that Krystal’s blonde goes pretty well on her at least as far as the color is concerned. I swear that it seems the majority of the time that Korean girls in K-pop that go blonde look like they did it with a home color kit at the dorm and didn’t have anyone advise them that the color they chose looks awful with their skin tone make them look sickly pale or jaundiced. Hyoyeon is one of the few K-pop blondes who actually looks better with blonde hair and that it really seems to suit her, but even she goes with the wrong shade at times.

      1. Hyuna on SNSD would be such a wonderful case of cognitive dissonance.

    2. Nana and Nari are pretty much the only idols that look godly with blond hair.

Choa from AOA begs to differ.

      2. Oh yeah! Can’t forget Choa.

The only thing that is unforgetable here is Krystal. And i’m really hoping for “Red Light District” concept come true.

    1. I really like this concept but out of all of them, I think Krystal got the short stick. She still looks good though.

  3. Thanks for doing the review. I pretty much agree with it. I’m really looking forward to some of the other songs from the album. I saw f(x) perform “Milk” last night on M Countdown and think I actually like it better than “Red Light.”

I think the live performance of “Red Light” on M Countdown might be better than the video which can be a bit much with all the cuts to a different shot, but the red background and green lasers made it hard to watch the video of the live peformance on M Countdown. Inkigayo is usually the best place to watch a performance due to better sets and much better camerawork.

I think they will be performing “Milk” with “Red Light” on M Countdown and Music Bank this week and then will perform “Red Light” with “All Night” on Music Core. I think on Inkigayo they are juts doing “Red Light.”

    Hey yellowslug,

I read your review at AJ and wanted to say thank you. You essentially saved me from having to write a review about how great this song is, especially since my author akisame took a huge dump all over it haha. I am honestly surprised so many people disliked this song. When I first listened to it, I thought Red Light was everything IGAB, Jeon Won Diary, What’s Your Name, and the piece of shit song 2NE1 released earlier this year wanted to be but utterly failed at achieving. Another great review from you and I’m glad to have read it.

    1. Aw, thanks. Just trying to keep it real and glad I saved you some time haha.

  5. f(x) performed another song off their album called “All Night” at Show Music Core earlier today. It’s a nice smooth song. It was abbreviated, which is typical for an additional song off the album for a group on the shows. Luna looks great (Man Sunny and her together would rock your freaking world and you would never stray from short women again), and as always Victoria looks awesome (Those eyes, those eyes, and those legs). Anyway here it is.

Clearly this is shaping up to be another strong album from this group to match Pink Tape. SNSD has to be a bit jealous after some of the filler they have had foisted on them for their last two albums. Although some of that is filler that is partially of their own creation. It almost seems a bit like SM has realized that f(x) might be easier to market internationally than SNSD and wants to get them some really good albums under their belt so if they do try to promote overseas music critics will give them some respect. I’ve often thought that f(x) is better positioned to promote in the West than any other SM acts. f(x) isn’t such a big girl group that it looks crazy big to Americans and they have a tendency to experiment and do the kind of electro-dance pop that even if you don’t speak the language will get you out of your seat.

I still laugh at the fangirls’ outsized cheering for Amber Josephine Liu. It’s funny how a tomboyish, Taiwanese-American from LA seems to be the most popular member of the group with fans. Amber just seems to have connected with Korean female fans on some level. I think it has to do with her being so non-conformist by Korean standards, being such a friendly person, and also being so laid back and confident about herself. The fact that the guys in the boy bands seem to enjoy hanging with her too probably helps in that she is doing in a non-threatening way what a lot of the fangirl’s would love to do (Just hang out and be cool with their oppas like it’s no big deal).

    1. Amber is so cool it’s unreal. Also, I agree that a group like f(x) would be better positioned to do well in the US but I thought the same thing about 2ne1 and nothing has really developed there either.
